LEGO® Star Wars™: The Skywalker Saga
Available on:PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch
Lego Star Wars: the Skywalker Sagais not just one of the bestLegogames but arguably one of the best games released in 2022. Bigger doesn’t always mean better, but this game givesStar Warsfans what they want by giving them nearly everyStar Warsthing imaginable.
Over 100 vehicles await, more than 300 playable characters, not to mention the fact that theSkywalker Sagatakes you through, well, the entire saga of Luke Skywalker in one game. All of it is made with loving attention to detail and rendered in a new engine, which adds some genuine visual flair to the game. While the gameplay mechanics may be a little simple for adults, as is the case with nearly allLegogames, there is a lot of variety in what you get to do.
Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Available on:PC, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U
2016’sForce Awakenswas one of the fewStar Warsmovies of this century to truly unite fan opinion behind it, and theLego Star Warsadaptation pulled off pretty much the same trick.
Not only does the game combine plenty ofStar Warsreferences withLegohumor, but it also manages to do it in a way that will entertain players of any age. You don’t have to be a die-hardStar Warsfan to enjoy the game, however – the main attraction here is the gameplay, which ranges from blaster action to puzzle solving to spacefaring dogfights. We especially loved playing as Poe on a secret mission to rescue Admiral Ackbar and making BB-8 mess with various machines to manipulate different bits of the environment.
With over 200 playable characters and the chance to explore Jakku, Takodana, D’Qar, and Starkiller Base as mini-open worlds, there’s a lot for film fans to love here – and the film’s main cast reprises their roles!
Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2
Available on:PC, PS 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One
This is another fun game that alternates between action gameplay and puzzle sequences and offers a lot of fun references for fans of the material it’s based on.
Comic book writer Kurt Busiek co-wrote a lot of the storyline here, and it really shows: this is aLegogame by fans, for fans, and the love for characters such as Doctor Strange, Ant-Man, Black Panther, and countless others shines through.
The story features superheroes from different eras and realities of theMarvelUniverse as they fight against the time-travelling villain Kang the Conqueror. The Avengers have to take on a variety of multiverse villains and bizarre anomalies, such as a cowboy version of Captain America, a medieval version of Hulk, and Spider-Gwen, all fun to discover.
The gameplay focuses on superhero wish fulfillment; whether you’re Spider-Man swinging on his webs, the Hulk hurling about large objects with aplomb, or Star Lord flying high into the skies, you get to do it all.Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2is an engaging, often witty, and sometimes even emotional experience that’s one of the bestLegogames, speaking to the child in all of us.
Lego City Undercover
Available on:PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Wii U
Lest we give the impression that the bestLegogames are all movie tie-ins, allow us to introduce you toLego City Undercover.Based on the series of Lego sets centered on urban environments, this open-world crime-fighting game is basically an all-agesLegoversion ofGrand Theft Auto.
You control undercover cop Chase McCain as he tackles a criminal gang led by his nemesis Rex Fury. You can also opt for several entertaining side missions, which allow you to explore the various areas of the Lego-constructed city. Either way, a lot of action is involved, including swinging across poles and performing wall jumps, as well as donning different disguises.
In trueLegostyle, there’s a lot of tongue-in-cheek homage to crime shows and movies, fromColumbotoGoodfellas, and the 20 districts of the game are all inspired by real-life cities. With environments ranging from woodlands and islands to busy downtown streets, there’s a lot to explore, and overall, this game provides entertaining challenges and laughs along the way.
Lego Lord of the Rings
Available on:PC, PS3, PS Vita Xbox 360, 3DS, DS
Hitting the right balance between parody and respect for the source material, this amusing game allows you to play as one of 80 characters, ranging from Frodo, Gandalf, and Legolas, to book-only characters such as Tom Bombadil.
Across 18 levels,Lego The Lord of the Ringstakes you through the events of all three films. The action ranges from sword fights to firing projectiles, to collecting lots of magical items, and in order to do this, each character uses a range of fun abilities.
If you fancy taking a wander around Middle Earth at your own pace, an open-world option allows you to explore everywhere save Mirkwood and the lands south of Mordor. Featuring music and movie dialogue, this is a must-play for fans. It’s so engaging we’d call it the bestLord of the Ringsgame adaptation you can currently play.
Lego Jurassic World
Life finds a way, and so, it seems, doesLego. Combining fantastic co-op gameplay with a succession of comedic moments, this is an endlessly fun, open-world game.
Lego Jurassic Worldclosely follows the first four films in the series, meaning you spend most of your time running away from dinosaurs. There’s little in the way of combat, as that would be totally off-brand; it’s not one of the bestLegogames in this regard. But if puzzles are your thing, such as rummaging around huge piles of dinosaur droppings to find useful items, there’s a lot to love.
It’s worth noting that while several scenes from the films are brilliantly recreated here, they’re done in a fun, family-friendly way so that the kids won’t have nightmares.
Lego DC Super-Villains
Available on:PC, Nintendo Switch, PS 4, Xbox One
There have been manyLego Batmangames, but this one’s the best; even though it doesn’t actually have Batman in the title. It essentially does what the movieSuicide Squadfailed to do: capitalize on the fact that in any superhero saga, the villains have the most fun. And there certainly is a lot of fun to be found here.
The game sees villains such as Lex Luthor, Harley Quinn, and The Joker battle ‘The Justice Syndicate’, a supposed group of superheroes who turn out to be villains themselves. With a mixture of action-based and puzzle-solving gameplay, winning here is all about teamwork, which is a great lesson for the kids.
Even amongLegogames, this one is more a game for kids than grown-ups, seeing as the gameplay gets repetitive and the puzzles are rather straightforward. DC superhero fans will still get a lot of enjoyment out of this game, not least from its original and engaging storyline.
Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7
Available on:PC, PS3, PS4, PSP, PS Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo DS
Puzzle-solving inLegogames can sometimes feel a little forced, particularly when superimposed on movies that are more about non-stop action than thinking deeply. But they’re an excellent match for theHarry Potterseries, where ultimately, it’s brains - not brawn - that win out.
Covering the last three books and four films of the series, the game is simple to pick up and play, even for non-gamers, but that doesn’t stop it from being immensely enjoyable. It offers countless environments to explore, each instantly recognizable from the movies. The puzzles aren’t too simple this time, and as with many otherLegogames on this list,Lego Happy Potteris even better with two players.
There are a lot of laughs to be had too, and the game does very well in translating wizarding duels into satisfying gameplay, too.
